The Second Annual Retreat of the Persephone Writers Organization
“For Women Who Write Horror”
Invitation For Members Only
Thursday, August 11, 2005 through Sunday, August 14, 2005
In Greek mythology, Persephone is the goddess of the dead as well as the goddess of fertility. She was kidnapped by Hades to be his wife in the underworld. Demeter, Persephone’s mother and goddess of the earth, sent Hermes to rescue her but Persephone had already eaten a pomegranate seed, the food of the dead. She was compelled to return to the underworld for a third of the year. Each year during winter, Demeter mourns the loss of her child, causing the vegetation to die and the earth to become cold until Persephone’s return in the spring.
For four days, a small group of creative, intelligent women will meet to write, workshop, talk about writing, and party. Think slumber party. Each participant will contribute to food and supplies, including the Persephone Feast Saturday night. Cooking and chores will be shared. This is an opportunity for women who write to share the experience and support one another in a casual, social setting.
